چکیده
Three researchers share this year ́s Nobel Prize in Chemistry: Dr. Yves Chauvin at the Institut Français du Pétrole, Rueil-Malmaison, France; Professor Robert H. Grubbs, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California, USA and Professor Richard R. Schrock, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences citation runs “for the development of the metathesis method in organic synthesis”. The discoveries of the laureates have had great effects on academic research, the development of new drugs and other biologically active compounds, polymeric materials and industrial syntheses. Below the background to their discoveries is described.

Progress in metathesis chemistry
In contrast to the production of simple bulk chemicals and polymers, which started shortly after the discovery of the “olefin scrambling” reaction, it was not until much later that this transformation was “rediscovered” by the academic world. In the last decade of the 20th century, the so-called olefin metathesis reaction gained real significance in advanced organic synthesis [1]. The developme...

متن کاملMo-catalyzed asymmetric olefin metathesis in target-oriented synthesis: enantioselective synthesis of (+)-africanol.
Catalytic asymmetric ring-opening metathesis (AROM) provides an efficient method for the synthesis of a variety of optically enriched small organic molecules that cannot be easily prepared by alternative methods. The development of Mo-catalyzed AROM transformations that occur in tandem with ring-closing metathesis are described. The utility of the Mo-catalyzed AROM/ring-closing metathesis is de...
متن کاملRecent Advancements in Stereoselective Olefin Metathesis Using Ruthenium Catalysts
Olefin metathesis is a prevailing method for the construction of organic molecules. Recent advancements in olefin metathesis have focused on stereoselective transformations. Ruthenium olefin metathesis catalysts have had a particularly pronounced impact in the area of stereoselective olefin metathesis. The development of three categories of Z-selective olefin metathesis catalysts has made Z-ole...
متن کاملThe allylic chalcogen effect in olefin metathesis
Olefin metathesis has emerged as a powerful tool in organic synthesis. The activating effect of an allylic hydroxy group in metathesis has been known for more than 10 years, and many organic chemists have taken advantage of this positive influence for efficient synthesis of natural products. Recently, the discovery of the rate enhancement by allyl sulfides in aqueous cross-metathesis has allowe...
